Beeswax remaining after the brood andhoney have been extracted from the combsis melted, over water, on a wood fire. It isthen passed trough a woven bamboo filterand falls into water, held in a trough below. It solidifies. The pieces are removed from thewater and moulded together into blocksroughly the size of a house brick. These havea hole through the centre, which enables thewax to cool more quickly. The rope aroundthe ends of the split tree trunk is used tosqueeze the filter to ensure that the maximumwax harvest is obtained.Beeswax is a valuable commodity. Thechemical composition of that produced byApis Laboriosa makes it particularly suitablefor lost wax casting. Here, a model is madefrom beeswax. This is then encased in a materialsuch as clay. When this has dried, it isheated, the wax melted and poured out. Theresulting cavity is then lined with moltenmetal and when this solidified, the mould ischipped away.- 149 -
