In 1900 the town had 476 inhabitants living in a rural social structure andimpoverished <strong>de</strong>rived from a severe lack of resourses visibly noticeable inagricultural areas.It’s after the civil war when an important part of “El Corredor” is built. Thenumber of inhabitants rise in the town linked to the potential of the infrastructures(roads and railways). Industry begins to arrive from 1965 onwards. Azuquecastarts to attract labourers who come to work in the factories. This immigrationphenomenon – which still persists today - is one of the main causes of the growingpopulation.The International Photographic Apiculture Contest organised by the TownHall of Azuqueca <strong>de</strong> Henares is a way to recuperate and spread activitiesconcerned with the environment. The town has a Apiculture Hall embryo towhat will be in the future the town’s eco-museum for Apiculture all over theworld. In these facilities some selected photographs from this contest areexhibited. This edition of 2009 and onwards will be sponsored by the SpanishPhotographic Confe<strong>de</strong>ration. Marks will be given to obtain distinctions in Artistand Maestro C.E.F. The winners of the contest in the three categories (individualphotograph, report of historical photograph) will receive a diploma and a medalof the confe<strong>de</strong>ration as well as prize money.The Apiculture hall in Azuqueca proudly shows its visitors “its jewel of thecrown” a wax press, to press wax brought from the town Maranchón and lovinglyrestored by the Town Hall of Azuqueca.At this moment in the Apiculture hall, along with daily work, a study tocategorise beehives from the province is being compiled. This project is almostcompleted and will contribute to the restoring of ethnological and economicpatrimony of the lands of the Alcarria.- 16 -
