84 CE QU'ON PEUT VOIR AVEC UN PETIT MICROSCOPE ne récolte la même espèce; les formes naturelles des ruisseaux changent avec la même rapidité que celles de nos infusions ; nous retournons à la même place, le lendemain même, et par fois, à notre grande surprise, tout a disparu ou bien des espèces inconnues ont remplacé les pre mières. « Aussi faut-il se hâter d'étudier ce que l'on a trouvé, déboucher les flacons, les laisser en repos et puiser à la surface, où tendent toujours à se réunir les petits habitants. » Dans les planches VII et VIII, nous donnons la silhouette d'un certain nombre d'Infusoires. Ils sont toujours constitués par de simples cellules recouvertes totalement ou en partie par des cils vibratiles. En un point, on distingue souvent un vague orifice entouré de cils plus forts : c'est la bouche. La plupart sont mobiles: ils nagent grâce au mouvement de leurs cils vibratiles. Les autres sont fixés par un pédicule: l'un des plus remarquables de ceux-ci, et en même temps l'un des plus communs, est la vorticelle, dont le pédicule se contracte très souvent comme un ressort à boudin (Planche VIII, 3). Dans l'intérieur du corps des Infusoires, on distingue des noyaux, des vacuoles, etc., dont la signification n'est pas très bien connue. Certains sont pourvus de suçoirs: nous représentons l'un d'eux (Planche VII, 28) ayant ainsi
LES INFUSOIRES 85 capturé un Infusoire plus petit que lui et le suçant. Il en est qui, au lieu de nager, « courent » véritablement à la surface des corps submergés en se servant de cils très gros (Planche VII, 30).
