SECRET MESSAGES
You can write secret messages on many different materials using invisible ink made with
lemon or crystals.
To make invisible lemon ink, you will need:
• A lemon
• A paintbrush
• A sheet of paper
• A beaker
• A candle
Squeeze the lemon and pour the juice into the beaker. Use the brush to write a message
with the lemon juice on the sheet of paper and let it dry.
With the help of a grown-up, move the paper over the candle flame slowly until the message
appears. Don't try to do this on your own! Don't forget to blow the candle out once you have
finished the experiment; do not move the lit candle; keep it away from flammable material;
out of the reach of small children and pets. Always use a stable, heat-resistant surface.
You can also reveal the secret lemon ink message by submerging the paper in black tea:
• Strong black tea
• A lemon
• A paintbrush
• A piece of paper
• A beaker
• A measuring spoon
• A dropper
• A bowl
Half-fill the bowl with water. Place 10 drops of strong black tea using the dropper and stir.
Squeeze the lemon and pour the juice into the beaker. Cut out a piece of paper to fit inside
the bowl and write a message using the brush and the lemon juice ink. Let it dry and... The
message will become invisible!
To reveal the message, place the paper inside the bowl so it is covered in black tea. Wait a
few minutes and... What happens? The invisible message!
SALT STALACTITES
Prepare the following material:
• Salt
• A magnifying glass
• 2 plastic or glass tumblers
• 4 strands of wool, each about 30cm long
• Warm water
• A plate
Twist the strands of wool together to make a thick cord. Fill the two containers with warm
water and add lots of salt. Keep adding salt until no more will dissolve. Place the plate
between the two tumblers and insert one end of the woollen cord into each one, letting the
middle part of the cord hang over the plate.
After a few days, you will notice salt stalactites have formed along the cord. You can see
them in greater detail using your magnifying glass.
