through forest and field carries with it a common responsibility for<br />

the care of nature. The pupils should also be told that damage to<br />

natural surroundings, like the maltreatment of animals, can be<br />

proceeded against in law and is a punishable offence. In the same<br />

way they should know something about the rules and regulations<br />

concerning hunting and fishing. But above all the teacher should<br />

strive to help the children discover the joy and interest that is bound<br />

up with the study of the rich and changing life of an undisturbed<br />

countryside. »<br />

« During nature outings the teacher should attempt to open the<br />

children's eyes to what is beautiful and purposeful in nature and<br />

teach them to make contact with it in such a way as not to damage<br />

or disturb it but rather to protect and care for it, where necessary. »<br />

« The pupil's instinct for collecting should be taken into consideration.<br />

The pupils should be urged to proceed carefully and not<br />

to destroy, disturb or damage in the course of collecting natural objects.<br />

Rare plants should be protected. The collecting of birds'eggs should<br />

not be allowed. »<br />

« They should be impressed with the need for proper fire<br />

precautions in the country and for not leaving paper and other rubbish<br />

about. Information should be given about the efforts being made for<br />

the care of nature and the protection of animals in our land. »<br />

II. — Secondary schools.<br />

The following items are included in the programme issued by the<br />

Government in 1950 for the « realskola », age-group approximately<br />

13-16.<br />

Items from the Biology and Health Education syllabus :<br />

— The country's plant and animal kingdoms; the history of their<br />

migrations to this country;<br />

— Preservation of Nature;<br />

— Outings in connection with the course.<br />

Instructions to teachers (quotations from instructions issued by the Royal Board<br />

of Education in 1955).<br />

During the study of plant and animal life, which takes place<br />

during the outings in connection with the courses of the various<br />

classes, special attention should be paid to the protection and care<br />

of Nature. Indeed, it is in the course of the excursions through<br />

forest and field that unsought-for opportunities present themselves<br />

to the teacher for impressing upon the children the importance of the<br />
