idea that nature and her creatures should not be the objects of thoughtless
destruction. This is of special importance during the Spring
outings, when natural life is more susceptible to damage than usual.
The collecting of birds' eggs and rare plants must not be allowed.
A reminder should be given at some suitable point about the regulations
that exist in our country for the protection and care of nature.
The pupils should also be told to respect the wishes and instructions
of landowners, and should be informed about the limitations to the
« common right » which every nature students must observe.
In connection with this course the teacher should impart to the
pupils some knowledge of the measures and regulations concerning
plant and animal life (hunting rights, game preservation, fishing rights,
fish preservation, reserves and other nature protection and nature
preservation measures). In general, the aspects of nature preservation
should be continually emphasized during this course.
In the school radio programmes there are programmes on nature
care.
In the attached list of school films those under the headings of
« Home Environment », « Geography » and « Natural Sciences
Subjects » should be of special interest in this context.
Films for schools.
A number of educational films for use in the schools deal with
subjects related to nature protection. Particularly relevant are films
prepared in connection with the syllabuses for « Home Environment »,
« Geography » and « Natural Sciences ». A film entitled « Fresh-
Water Outings » has recently been produced by the Board of Education.
In conclusion, the Board would like to point out that the actual
instruction in nature care is reinforced by a conscious effort to make
the teaching of this subject both concrete and stimulating. As can
been seen from the above instructions, the Board considers outings
to be of specially great importance in this effort. The pupils' feelings
for nature are also awakened by means of open-air activities
(e.g. special « open-air » days) which are prescribed for the Primary
and Secondary schools. Instruction in path-finding and map-reading,
included in the physical training syllabus, provides another good
source for teaching about nature.
