DRAMATURGE HISTORIEN
À 38 ans, l’auteur congolais Julien Mabiala
HISTORIAN AND PLAYWRIGHT
38-year old Congolese playwright Julien Mabiala
Bissila has become the first winner of the new RFI-
Théâtre prize for his play Chemin de fer. He was born
in Brazzaville in 1976 and discovered the theatre by
going through the library of his father who was a
primary school teacher. In 2002, he founded his
own theatre company, Nguiri-Nguiri Théâtre, and
began staging his own plays. In Crabe rouge, staged
in 2013, he goes back over the trial of generals in
“the disappeared of the Beach” case in Brazzaville.
Julien Mabiala Bissila, via fables and drama, has
become the historian of Congo. In Chemin de fer, he
no longer evokes the post-war period, but plunges
into the height of the conflict. His style has rhythm
and inspiration. Nowadays he concentrates on his
new play; it will not be about death and war, but
about love. He promised so.
