KINGDOMS OF MADAGASCAR
Durant la période de la monarchie malgache, entre 1300
et 1896, on comptait 3 grands royaumes :
Le royaume Sakalava à l’ouest. Andriamisara et son fils
Andriandahifotsy ont été les deux grands monarques de
ce domaine. Suite à des conflits familiaux, ce royaume a
été divisé en deux : d’un côté le royaume de Menabe et de
l’autre celui de Boina. Une fois divisé, il devint vulnérable
face aux attaques des ennemis.
Le royaume Betsimisaraka à l’est. Ramananao fut le
premier roi mais il fut destitué par Ratsimilaho qui se fit
proclamer roi et pris le nom de Ramaromanompo.
Le royaume d’Imerina sur les Hautes Terres centrales.
Fondé par Andriamanelo, le nom « Imerina », signifiant d’où
la vue porte loin, a été attribué par Ralambo. Ce dernier a
ensuite été succédé par Andriamasinavalona qui a partagé
le royaume entre ses quatre fils. Plus tard, suite à une guerre
fraternelle, l'un d’eux, appelé Andrianampoinimerina, fut le
seul souverain du royaume d’Imerina.

During the period of monarchy in
Madagascar, between 1300 and 1896,
the country was divided into three large
kingdoms:
The Sakalava kingdom in the west of
the island. Andriamisara and his son
Andriandahifotsy were the two great
monarchs of the period. Following
conflicts in the family, the kingdom was
split in two: the kingdom of Menabe
and that of Boina. Once divided, the
two new kingdoms became vulnerable
to attacks by their enemies.
The Betsimisaraka kingdom in the east. Ramananao
was the first king, but he was deposed by Ratsimilaho,
who had himself proclaimed king and took the name of
Ramaromanompo.
The kingdom of Imerina in the central High Plateaus.
Founded by Andriamanelo, the name Imerina, which
means ‘from where you can see far in the distance’,
was given by Ralambo. The successor to the latter was
Andriamasinavalona, who divided the kingdom up
between his four sons. At a later period, following a war
between them, Andrianampoinimerina, one of the sons,
became the sole sovereign to rule over the kingdom of
Imerina.
