LETTERATURA INGLESE<br />

Anche la letteratura inglese ha visto diversi pensatori cimentarsi nel problema del senso e del<br />

nonsenso: con il subentramento della relativ<strong>it</strong>à d’ogni cosa e del dubbio, ancora ai giorni nostri si<br />

prosegue nell’analisi di questo irrisolvibile dilemma. Uno dei più recenti e significativi autori è<br />

stato il celebre Samuel Beckett, padre del Teatro dell’Assurdo.<br />

10. Samuel Beckett<br />

Beckett became popular and well-known more because of Wa<strong>it</strong>ing for Godot than any of his other<br />

works. His plays placed him in the centre of the Theatre of the Absurd, one of the major movements<br />

in modern drama since the end of World War II.<br />

This thesis is an attempt to look into Beckett's absurd<strong>it</strong>y, considering <strong>it</strong> as a kind of art which affects<br />

mostly the emotions perception rather than the reason.<br />

11. The Theory of Absurd<strong>it</strong>y<br />

Absurd<strong>it</strong>y is a key word in Beckett's dramatic wr<strong>it</strong>ings as well as of the whole Theatre of the<br />

Absurd. Three important problems could be underlined through the analysis of his works:<br />

1. what Absurd<strong>it</strong>y is,<br />

2. in what fate life moments <strong>it</strong> appears,<br />

3. what consequences for a human view of life <strong>it</strong> holds w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>it</strong>self.<br />

1. One of the most basic philosophical questions asks whether there is any meaning in our<br />

existence at all. The human necess<strong>it</strong>y of unifying explanation of world has always been<br />

satisfied by religion and creators of the philosophical systems who made the human life<br />

meaningful. The natural desire to get to know and understand the world in <strong>it</strong>s most hidden<br />

spheres was fulfilled by religious dogmas about the existence of God, which guaranteed the<br />

meaningful contingency of human life.<br />

2. World War I and World War II caused deep destruction and loss of human ultimate<br />

certainties and defin<strong>it</strong>ely brought about a world missing any unifying principle, a world<br />
