Abstract<br />

Sport commentary has two different aspecs. First it is shared by several speakers,<br />

each of whom plays a precise role throughout the match. Second, this commentary is<br />

made up of different types of discourse sequences. On the one hand there are<br />

„descriptive‟ sequences in which the reporter describes what happens in front of his<br />

own eyes; this description is motivated by the action going on in real time and it<br />

leads us to think that these play-by-play actions will be supported by prosodic<br />

variations. On the other hand, these descriptive sequences alternate with either<br />

pseudo-monologue (the reporter knows that he is actually addressing an audience)<br />

or pseudo-dialogue sequences when the commentator develops technical or<br />

strategic considerations during the game (for example when the expert makes<br />

comments). Our hypothesis is that these types of discourse are characterised by<br />

different prosodic features, as well as by syntactic constructions. Our corpus<br />

consists of live TV commentaries recorded during the last (2007) Rugby World Cup.<br />

We recorded 36 hours of TV programmes which permit a „multi-modal‟ (sounds and<br />

images) analysis. We selected the games in which commentaries are available in<br />

French, English and Japanese and these three languages are analysed. We analyse<br />

variations of melodic patterns as well as sudden changes of tempo or rhythm<br />

according to the action actually seen on the screen.<br />

1. Premessa<br />

<strong>La</strong> cronaca in diretta del giornalista sportivo presenta molteplici<br />

specificità linguistiche che ne fanno un genere di discorso a sè e, in<br />

quanto genere proprio, facilmente identificato dagli ascoltatori.<br />

D‘altronde, e ciò sarà oggetto di una delle parti della nostra analisi (v.<br />

4.2.), sembra che tali specificità linguistiche (lessicali, sintattiche,<br />

prosodiche) siano comuni a diverse lingue. Nel presente articolo, ci<br />

interesseremo più particolarmente delle specificità prosodiche e<br />
