The dataused come from the Istat surveys about the demographic balances of total andforeign resident population for the period 2002-2010.Over the last ten years the population residing in Italy has had a strong increase,most of all due to foreign immigration. The Italian population, however, hasshowed a decrease primarily due to negative natural demographic balance. At themunicipal level the different dynamics of migration and natural balance for the twopopulations (Italian and foreign) have generated in some cases phenomena ofcompensation, or even recovery, of the increase in total population.To highlight these changes, we classified municipalities according to the type ofvariation of population (increasing, stationary, decreasing) and its main causes
