deconstructions to make up the vital history of the form.’

Developments, such as the growth in national and international prizes for fiction, have tended to
distort the promotion of books published commercially. However, technological changes in the
publishing world and the arrival of the e­book have enabled readers to exert more influence on what is
published, resulting in a renewed interested in literary treasures, some apparently lost forever.
The five novels chosen for this course are all forgotten or
neglected books, written by talented authors, which have
been rediscovered by readers and critics, or by being made
into films or television series. These novels are set in the
United States, Germany, Turkey and the United Kingdom
and explore themes of particular concern in the last century
in the inter­war period and in the aftermath of the Second
World War. A study of these books is also worthwhile, as
they address some of the issues raised by both Malcolm
Bradbury and George Orwell.
De colleges zijn tweewekelijks. Ieder college begint
met een korte inleiding in het Engels op schrijver
en werk door de docente. Veel nadruk zal liggen op
groepsdiscussies over de gelezen werken aan de
hand van een lijst met vragen die ongeveer twee
weken van tevoren wordt uitgereikt. De discussies
zijn voornamelijk in het Engels. Voor het lezen is
vanzelfsprekend een redelijke passieve beheersing van
het Engels noodzakelijk maar voor spreekvaardigheid is
uw niveau minder belangrijk omdat in het werkcollege
door cursisten zowel Nederlands als Engels kan worden
gesproken.
