geleiding. Voor lineair geconjugeerde moleculen
(links) is er maar één pad.
English summary
Sense Jan van der Molen is associate professor at the Leiden
Institute of Physics. He studies the electrical conductivity of
single molecules. Due to their small size, these molecules behave
in accordance with the laws of quantum mechanics. These
postulate, among other things, that electrons sometimes behave
like waves. Van der Molen and his colleagues were the first
to show the occurrence at room temperature of ‘destructive
quantum interference’: the phenomenon that electron waves
with a certain phase difference cancel each other out. This phase
difference resulted from the smart design of their molecular
‘electric wires’.
