Dit microscopische beeld van een
zebravisembryo van enkele dagen oud
toont de verspreiding van immuuncellen
(blauw) en kankercellen (rood).
Het bovenste plaatje laat zien dat de
kankercellen zich vanuit het borstgedeelte,
waar ze zijn geïnjecteerd,
naar het staartweefsel hebben verspreid.
Linksonder: de interactie tussen
immuuncellen en kankercellen.
English summary
Ewa Snaar-Jagalska, associate professor of Molecular Cell
Biology, studies the mechanisms of cancer biology using
zebrafish embryos as a model. These embryos are transparent.
This, in combination with fluorescent labelling of specific cell
types, allows for detailed study of processes such as immune
cell migration and tumour metastasis. Snaar has discovered that
neutrophils, a specific type of immune cell, play an important
role in metastasis. They prepare the metastatic niche – the
location where migrating cancer cells leave the circulation and
enter the surrounding tissue. This discovery has important
clinical implications: it explains why certain cancer drugs, while
blocking tumour growth, actually increase the risk of metastasis
– and thus paves the way for better approaches.
