but just before the decision was due the date
was moved to 1 February 2013. Note that the
distribution of this sum was intended for 2013.

The Alderman for Innovation, Culture
and Public Space at the municipality of
Eindhoven, Mary-Ann Schreurs, has on
several occasions informed us that she is in
favour of accommodating the activities of
the NIAf in Eindhoven. Since 2010 various
facilities have been examined, plans drawn
up and evaluated. The NIAf was involved
in the plans for the former Philips Physics
Laboratory and the plans for Volt! on the
former Philips site, Strijp-S, in Eindhoven. Owing
to national spending cuts on culture and the
immediate consequences for the NIAf, we
considered whether activities in the field of
talent development and education could be
continued in a multi-tenanted building with
other institutes. This is, of course, conditional
on the Province of North Brabant granting a
subsidy for talent development specifically
for the visual arts, design and the audiovisual
sector. At the time of writing this report
(February 2013) this was still not the case.

All the turbulence in the Dutch art world
and the fact that the NIAf’s very existence
was under threat, forced us to suspend the
selection of new participants for the artist-inresidence
programme in 2011. There were
a large number of applications, namely 30,
the highest number to date. Following the
Council for Culture’s recommendation in May
2012 and the State Secretary’s decision not to
adopt the recommendation for the phased
closing of postgraduate institutes/workplaces,
in June 2012 it was definitely decided to phase
out our activities with regard to the artist-inresidence
programme.
In 2012 we started with six artists-in-residence.
In April two left because their period at the
Ateliers had come to an end. In September
one of the participants left early because he
was offered a teaching post at the Maryland
College of Art in Baltimore (USA). The last three
participants left at the end of December. Two
of them had reached their maximum period
at the Ateliers and one participant left five
