With the closure of the NIAf – the centre of
expertise for animation film in the Netherlands
is in danger of disappearing. And with it, the
documentation collection, artwork and films
and the specialised multimedia centre also
threaten to become fragmented with the
loss of one central contact. The information
point function in which the expertise of the
staff played such an important role, has not
as yet been secured at other institutes in the
Netherlands.
The fact that the NIAf might possibly disappear
from Tilburg increased demand for workshops
and the supervision of educational projects
considerably in the year under review.
Workshops that were, in fact, planned for
2013 were brought forward. And school
teachers were trained to set up and run
animation projects themselves despite many
not having the necessary equipment at their
disposal. These activities are held mainly in
North Brabant. In addition, a large education
project, comparable to the Kunstbalie, which
NIAf set up in Brabant, has been organised
in Drenthe. This project continues through to
2016.
Students from Utrecht University on an onthe-job
training scheme updated the special
web site for animation education and new
texts were added for the various age groups.
One of the conclusions in their report was
that animation is a suitable tool for giving
shape to the concept of “media literacy”, as
formulated by the Council for Culture.
Several students from the University of
Amsterdam, Utrecht University, HKU
Hilversum, AKV|St. Joost and Willem de
Kooning Academie visited the NIAf and
were introduced to the various aspects of
animation as an art discipline.
Origins of Dutch Animation is the title of
the doctoral research that our colleague
Mette Peters is carrying out at the
Onderzoeksinstituut voor Geschiedenis en
Cultuur at Utrecht University.
