Preface<br />

The tables of the Statistical <strong>Yearbook</strong> of <strong>Norway</strong> for <strong>1957</strong> have on the whole<br />

been arranged in the same way as in the last edition. It should, however, be<br />

mentioned that tables 266 and 267 in the 1956 edition on the households and<br />

their composition have been transferred to II: Population, table 167 on motor<br />

vehicle court cases to XX : Justice and crime, and table 189 on the balance of<br />

payments to XXIII: National accounts.<br />

In order to give room to new tables without increasing the volume, some of<br />

the previous tables have been reduced or in some cases omitted. In many cases<br />

prewar years have been left out.<br />

The main revisions which have been made in the current edition are:<br />

Population. A new table 13 on persons born abroad has been added, whereas<br />

tables 13 and 15 in the 1956 edition on the average number of children in marriages<br />

have been omitted. The tables on the age distribution of the population<br />

have been rearranged and reduced.<br />

Vital statistics etc. Two new tables, 32 and 37, on live births and deaths per<br />

1000 population by counties have been added. Table 22 in the 1956 edition on<br />

population and increase of population by counties has been left out.<br />

Public health etc. New tables are : 54 on deaths from accidents by principal<br />

causes, and 55 on dental care of children in public primary schools. In table 56<br />

on conscripts by stature data on ability for military service have been included.<br />

Agriculture. A new table 69 on ordinary working days in agriculture has<br />

been added. Tables 82 and 83 in the 1956 edition on accounting results are rearranged<br />

and reduced.<br />

Forestry. Tables 89: Appraisal of forests, and 93 : Average annual consumption<br />

of wood on farms in the 1956 edition have been omitted.<br />

Census of establishments. The tables in the 1956 edition have partly been<br />

rearranged and reduced. On the other hand data on water transport and other<br />

transport activity, etc. have been added. Furthermore data on type of ownership<br />

and kind of economic organization of firms have been included.<br />

Mining, manufacturing etc. A new table 120 on consumption of fuel and<br />

electrical energy in mining and manufacturing has been added.<br />

Transport activity etc. New tables are : 157 on railways' consumption of fuel<br />

etc. and electric energy, and 170 on persons killed or injured in road traffic<br />

accidents by category of road users. Table 157 in the 1956 edition on railways:<br />

length of line etc. has been rearranged and reduced.<br />

Money and credit market. New tables are : 205 on loans based on hire purchase<br />

contracts, and 209 on private pension funds. The following tables in the 1956<br />

edition have been omitted : 190 on foreign liabilities and assets, 194 and 210<br />

giving monthly data for Bank of <strong>Norway</strong>, commercial and savings banks, and<br />

207 on total bank loans by industries. The tables on state banks, loan associations<br />

etc., <strong>Norway</strong>'s Post Office Savings Bank and Post Giro have partly been rearranged<br />

and reduced.<br />

Social insurance and relief. From the census of old age pensioners 1955 four
