ABSTRACT
It´s estimated that at least two million people are exposed to wood dust every day around the
world. The spirometry is test than helps prevent and allows the diagnosis and quantification of
respiratory disorders. This study aims to evaluate the profile pneumofuncional of workers
exposed to direct contact with wood dust. We evaluated thirty-six workers from eight wood
insdustries engaged in the occupation of destopadores, sawyers and circuleiros aged among
twenty-two to forty-five years old, and they don´t have current or respiratory comorbidities.
Data collection was performed by applying a questionnaire and by an evaluation
pneumofuncional. The results were analyzed together with spirometric values, which were
compared to predicted values according to the Consensus on Spirometry of Pneumology and
Tisiology Brazilian Society (SBPT, 2002). The spirometric results is shown below that
expected for the variables SVC, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF, FEF25% -75% and MEF50%,
with statistical significance only for the variables SVC, FEV1% and MEF50 and higher
values in the variables MEF75% and FEV1/FVC%, p = 0.021, demonstrating statistically
significant. Comparing the groups smokers and non-smokers wasn’t obtained statistically.
The prevalence values of SVC and MEF50% lower than predicted for the group of nonsmokers,
with a small difference and not significant. According to pulmonary function was
observed that 25.9% of workers showed evidence of altered function suggesting the presence
of restrictive lung disease from mild to moderate, but there was no statistical significance
between the presence of changes in lung function, smoking habits and occupation.
