O estudo comparativo deste tipo de
mobiliário decorado a teca e sissó ou ébano
parece apontar para dois tipos distintos,
embora formalmente afins. Num destes
grupos os recortes são sempre de vocabulário
europeu: ou simples molduras geométricas
ou flores-de-lis ou semelhantes. No outro
grupo em que se integra este escritório, os
recortes são de inspiração islâmica. Em
numerosos exemplares, esta decoração
baseada em recortes de tipo islâmico,
aparece associada a uma diversidade de
tipologias de trabalho de embutidos em
marfim que podemos com segurança
classificar como mogóis. O desenho das asas
laterais deste escritório é também, igual ao
dos escritórios com decoração de tipo mogol.

ebony (as in the present cabinet), or
rosewood ( in most cases). The ebony frames
create teak reserves which in turn are
centered by ebony inlaid panels. Some of the
ebony panels are inlaid with ivory stringing.
Brass carrying handles of rectangular section
are secured to the side panels of the box. The
drawers have drop handles also in brass.
The comparative study of this type of
furniture decorated with teak and rosewood
or ebony panels seems to point to the
existence of two different groups. In one of
these groups the designs of the cut-outs are
always of a European type: either simple
geometric frames or “fleur de lis” type. In the
other group, to which this cabinet belongs,
the designs of the cut-outs are always of
Islamic type. In many of the cabinets of this
second type this Islamic decoration is
associated with ivory inlay work which can
be securely classified as mughal. This does
not happen in the group with European
designs. Rectangular section carrying
handles are commonly found in cabinets
with mughal type decoration as with the
present example.
