com Vinte e Quatro Jinas

Pequeno altar portátil em latão
representando os vinte e quatro Jinas da
religião Jain organizados numa configuração
geométrica, quase simétrica e abstracta,
consistente com a procura de simplicidade e
despojamento associados com esta religião.
Mahavira, o Jina histórico, contemporâneo
do Buda histórico, é o vigésimo quarto de
uma linha mítica de Jinas que o teriam
precedido. Todos os Jinas são habitualmente
representados de modo exactamente
idêntico. Quando não é acrescentado
qualquer atributo, o que é a situação mais
corrente, a identidade do retratado poderá
eventualmente ser revelada por uma
inscrição.

Small brass altarpiece showing the twenty
four Jinas of the Jain religion arranged in a
highly stylized quasi-symetric, almost
abstract geometric fashion, consistent with
the quest for simplicity and bareness
associated with Jainism. Mahavira the
historic Jina, contemporary of the historic
Buddha, is the twenty fourth Jina in a
sequence of mythical earlier Jinas, usually
depicted exactly alike. In the absence of an
attribute, which is mostly the case, an
inscription might identify the name of the
Jina depicted.
Here one of the Jinas is shown in the centre,
on a throne surmounted by a canopy held by
two elephants, seated on a cushion, in a
meditating posture. Two lions (a symbol of
power and sovereignty) support the base of
the throne. On either side are a Yaksha and a
pair of musicians (or garland bearers?). In
the lower register the figures of the donors
