Pintura de grande formato em suporte de
papel representando São Jerónimo semidesnudo
sentado sobre um manto branco,
sob uma árvore, com um braço atrás das
costas e o outro segurando a corrente do
leão. São Jerónimo veste calças verde-escuro
e calça requintados sapatos de pano chineses
bordados. Em primeiro plano vê-se um
destes sapatos e um odre de pele pintados
com grande atenção aos detalhes. Esta cena
tem por fundo uma colina, um céu ao
amanhecer e uma árvore pintada à maneira
estilizada e contorcida de algumas escolas
chinesas. A bela figura do leão pintado com
grande delicadeza é muito curiosa e revela o
desconhecimento da realidade anatómica do
animal indo antes buscar inspiração,
possivelmente a representações de leões
míticos correntes na iconografia chinesa.
Esta pintura é uma adaptação por um artista
chinês de uma gravura de Mário Cartaro de
1560, gravador italiano, natural de Viterbo,
que por sua vez se inspirou na figura de São
Jerónimo de Miguel Ângelo na Capela
Sistina no Vaticano1. Da pintura europeia o

Large format painting depicting the seminude
Saint Jerome sitting on a white cloak,
under a tree, his right arm behind his back
and the left arm holding the chain of the
lion. The Saint wears dark blue trousers and
sophisticated Chinese embroidered cloth
shoes. In the foreground one of the shoes he
is not wearing and a leather bottle are
depicted with great attention to detail. The
background of this scene is a hill, an early
morning sky and a contorted stylized tree
painted in the manner of some Chinese
schools. The beautiful image of the lion,
painted with great delicacy is intriguing as it
reveals a lack of knowledge of the anatomy
of the animal, probably drawing inspiration
