rocha era considerado mais precioso do que
ouro ou prata. Na realidade foi numa escada
de cristal de rocha que Buda desceu do céu
de Tavatimsa” 1. Muitas destas imagens de
Buda em cristal de rocha estão ligadas ao
Distrito de Hot na região de Chiang Mai.
Vários exemplares provêm do Chedi Sung, do
Wat Si Khong e do Wat Dok. Um buda de
cristal de rocha notável é o Buda de Phra
Kaeo Setangkha Mani uma das imagens mais
veneradas no Norte que tem associada uma
história romântica e uma origem mítica, mas
que mais provavelmente remontará ao século
XVI2. Muitas imagens de Buda de cristal de
rocha são também provenientes do Laos,
cuja escultura neste período tem grandes
afinidades com a do Norte da Tailândia. No
Museu Nacional em Bangkok conserva-se
um Buda de cristal de rocha do século XVII3 e vários, do século XV ao século XVIII estão

Other examples are the Phra Kaeo Setangkha
Mani Chrystal Buddha, one of the most
important images in the North with a
romanticized history and mythical origin, but
probably from the early 16th century2. Many
rock crystal Buddha images were also carved
in Laos where Budhist sculpture in this
period shows many of the stylistic
characteristics of the Northern Thailand
school of Lanna. Other examples are in the
Bangkok National Museum (17th cent) 3 and
the Chiang Mai National Museum (15th-18th cent) 4.
