Pequena escultura de marfim, possivelmente
de presépio, do Menino Jesus dormente.
Veste uma túnica diáfana que deixa
parcialmente descobertos os braços e as
pernas. A cabeça esculpida com grande
delicadeza revela traços fisionómicos
chineses tais como olhos rasgados e boca
pequena. O cabelo está esculpido em sulcos
indicando madeixas que terminam em
caracóis estilizados. O braço direito dobrado,
de punho fechado, segue junto ao corpo e o
braço esquerdo com a mão sobre o rosto
apoia a cabeça, uma postura mais frequente
nas representações do Menino Jesus como
Bom Pastor.
É difícil precisar o local onde esta escultura
altamente invulgar foi executada. Segundo
Derek Gillman a imaginária cristã chinesa em
marfim do séc. XVII terá sida executada pelos
artífices de Zhangzhou na Província de
Fujian na terra firme da China, integrada no
comércio com Manila1. Não há registo de
que existiam oficinas de escultura ebúrnea

A small ivory sculpture of the sleeping Infant
Jesus, possibly from a crib. The Infant wears
a light tunic leaving uncovered part of the
arms and legs. The head carved with great
delicacy displays Chinese features such as the
slit eyes and small mouth. The hair is carved
with grooves defining locks terminating in
stylized curls. The flexed right arm with
closed fist is held close to the body and the
left arm with the hand against the left cheek
holds the head. This posture is more
commonly found in carvings of the Infant
Jesus as Good Sheppard.
It is difficult to be precise about where this
highly unusual ivory carving was produced.
