Electric dreams from Sond’Ar-te
By Barry Millington, Evening Standard 07.07.10
The imposing Mercers’ Hall was the implausible venue
for this showcase of cutting-edge Portuguese electroacoustic
music, courtesy of the City of London
Festival.
Four works were heard, of which two were damp
squibs and one (Flo Menezes’ O Farfalhar das Folhas:
The Rustling of Leaves) a gritty but coherent piece
that referenced the festival’s theme of bees and
biodiversity, while exploring the ramifications of liberty
in a philosophical sense.
Electric atmosphere: Sond’Ar-te
More substantial still was Miguel Azguime’s (ThS)inking Survival Kit, the eccentric
orthography of whose title heralded a work of imagination but almost wilful obscurity. It
combines complex texts similarly alluding to sustainability, elemental visuals derived from
natural phenomena (Paula Azguime) and a score of rich invention.
There were presentation problems, however: vast acres of text were incomprehensible,
whether in English (Shakespeare, Joyce), French or Portuguese, while not one of the six
screens offered a clear view, so cluttered was the stage.
Frances Lynch’s rendering of Where the Bee Sucks — the electronically enhanced hisses
and shrieks positively feral — was a tour de force and the playing of the Sond’Ar-te
Electric Ensemble under Jean-Sebastien Béreau impressive.
(ThS)inking Survival Kit, a festival commission receiving its UK premiere, is a work of
breathtaking ambition if flawed execution.
Festival continues until August 6.
