Each summer the City of London Festival<br />

brings the City's unique buildings and<br />

outdoor spaces to life with a programme of<br />

music, visual arts, film, walks and talks,<br />

much of it free. From 21 June to 9 July, the<br />

2010 Festival celebra<strong>te</strong>s music and culture<br />

from the Portuguese-speaking world,<br />

presents the next generation of classical<br />

music stars and gets the Square Mile<br />

‘buzzing’ in the In<strong>te</strong>rnational Year of<br />

Biodiversity.<br />

The 2010 Festival opens with the UK debut<br />

of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra with<br />

virtuoso Brazilian pianist Cristina Ortiz<br />

playing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2 (21<br />

June). A major commission this year is a<br />

new work from one of Portugal’s leading<br />

con<strong>te</strong>mporary composers Miguel Azguime (http://www.colf.org)<br />

<strong>for</strong> the Sond’Ar-<strong>te</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> Ensemble (6<br />

July). Goanese soprano Patricia Rozario is joined by Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses in a<br />

programme of Bach, Goan and Brazilian folksong arrangements. Villa-Lobos will also be heard<br />

throughout the Festival in chamber music, songs and solo works.<br />

The Festival will ‘commission’ new honey through the installation of beehives throughout the<br />

City to mark the In<strong>te</strong>rnational Year of Biodiversity. Bee-rela<strong>te</strong>d events will include new poetry<br />

and music, honey tastings and seminars.<br />

There will also be a spectacular concert each week in St Paul’s Cathedral; Mon<strong>te</strong>verdi’s<br />

Vespers 1610 (22 June); Haydn’s The Creation (29 June) and Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 (8<br />

July).<br />

The Festival en<strong>te</strong>rtains all those that live, work and visit this special location with unique<br />
