followed by <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> Richard Thomas Lowe (1802 -1874)<br />

during <strong>the</strong> XIX century, particularly his contributions to <strong>the</strong><br />

Transactions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cambridge Philosophical Society vol.<br />

4 from 1831 <strong>and</strong> his Manual Flora <strong>of</strong> Madeira <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Adjacent<br />

The geographic distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exclusive endemic<br />

taxa <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>archipelagos</strong> <strong>of</strong> Madeira <strong>and</strong> Selvagens follows<br />

<strong>the</strong> same pattern obtained for <strong>the</strong> whole group <strong>of</strong> vascular<br />

plants, i.e., <strong>the</strong> larger isl<strong>and</strong>s possess a higher number <strong>of</strong><br />
