Outro assunto imperdível ilustra a capa desta edição. LAND HO! The famous phrase of “Land Ho” that the Portuguese sailor cried out from his ship when he spotted Brazil still echoes in our subconscious. The story goes that the first foreigners who landed on Brazilian soil numbered 516. At that time, they took over large areas by assault, without asking the local inhabitants. A lot has changed from then to now and more recently we understand that foreigners can no longer own more land. The decision, taken by the Solicitor-General (AGU), in 2010, that seemed like revenge on the first Portuguese settlers, has driven away needed foreign investment. The special story in this issue outlines where this stands as to the movement to establish clear rules that could lead to land purchases by companies and groups based outside Brazil, something important for the expansion of the forestry based segment. Another important subject illustrates the cover of this Issue. Exotic pests are becoming more common in Brazil and are beginning to cause much damage, especially for planted eucalyptus forests. Learn a little more about them, especially about the methods for combatting them. Also don’t miss the story about sustainable forestry management, and get to see the strengths and benefits of the practice for native species, and also the opinion of two research scientists about what could evolve. We hope you have the same pleasure in reading this month's issue as we did in producing it. Pleasant reading!
