Pesquisadores da Chalmers University
of Technology, na Suécia, desenvolveram
esearchers at the Chalmers University of
Technology in Sweden have developed a
method for 3D printing with a wood-based
ink in a way that mimics the unique structure
of wood. The research can revolutionize
the manufacture of green products.
Years ago, scientists had created a way of 3D printing
using wood fiber. Now, they have developed a new
printing method, producing a solid material with the
structure and qualities of natural wood. Through the
emulation of wood’s natural cellular architecture, they
now can create sustainable tree-derived products, with
unique properties - from clothing to packaging, furniture,
and healthcare and personal care products.
The original material consisted of a nanocellulose
gel, containing small cellulose fibers, which were
obtained from wood pulp. A variety of objects could be
printed from it, but they would not have the porosity,
resistance, and twisting force of the actual wood. Now,
however, researchers have added a new ingredient: hemicellulose,
which is a natural component of plant cells.
This boosted the strength of the gel, acting as a glue to
help keep the cellulose fibers together.
Also, they scanned the genetic code of natural wood
and used this code to instruct a 3D printer that was
printing with the newly enhanced gel. As a result, they
were able to accurately control the arrangement of
nanofibers during the printing process, creating simple
items that were not only made of wood fiber but also
had the ultrastructure of natural wood.
The way wood grows is controlled by its genetic
code, which gives it its unique properties in terms of
