Os atuais proprietáriosdo Funchal são um grupo de milionários,baseados na Califórnia,e que pretendem preservar um navioque é único, sendo uma preciosidadequando analisado à luz daarquitetura naval. Pretendem agoraretirá-lo de Lisboa, repará-lo edefinir aquilo que será o futuro donavio, havendo para já garantiasque não será desmantelado e queirá manter o nome da nossa Cidadedo Funchal. O navio Funchalfoi lançado à água a 10 de fevereirode 1961, na Dinamarca, por encomendada Empresa Insulana deNavegação, com projeto de Rogériode Oliveira. Foi o maior naviode passageiros construído até entãodaquele estaleiro e tinha comofunção ligar Lisboa às ilhas da Madeira,Açores e Canárias, realizandomensalmente duas viagens noitinerário Lisboa, Funchal, Tenerife,Funchal, Lisboa, seguindo--se na viagem seguinte os Açoresvia Funchal. Integrava uma importantefrota de navios de passageirosportugueses, constituída pormais de vinte unidades, entre asquais o N/T Infante Dom Henrique,N/T Santa Maria, N/T VeraCruz e N/T Príncipe Perfeito, osquatro maiores paquetes portuguesesabatidos em 1977. O Funchalserviu de iate presidencial a AméricoTomás em 1972 quando foramtransportados os restos mortais dePedro IV de Portugal para o Brasil,sob escolta militar. (…) Terminouo seu último cruzeiro em Lisboa,já com registo na Madeira e bandeiraPortuguesa, a 16 de setembrode 2010 (…). Efetuou o seu últimocruzeiro ao serviço da PortuscaleCruises de 28 de dezembro de2014 a 2 de janeiro, curiosamentepara assistir ao magistral fogo deartifício na baía da cidade que lhedeu o nome, encontrando-se desdeessa data imobilizado no portode Lisboa (…). O Funchal voltanovamente a ser leiloado, tendoem 29 de janeiro sido vendido, destavez em Londres, a um grupo deinvestidores norte americano como intuito de o preservar.
