ENTREVISTA >> Recentemente, a entidade perdeu o presidente Carlos Roberto Pupo. What is the legacy left by the former Director? I already knew him before I became part of the Association. When I was with the State of Pará Secretary of Development, I began to have a relationship with AIMEX and Pupo. He has always been a fighter, knowledgeable in the area, had a slightly more penetrating way of dialogue, but this was also because of the Forestry Sector’s treatment, with its image related to deforestation, which we know is not valid. Pupo knew all the weaknesses of the Sector and all the regulatory improvements, so he left a legacy that undoubtedly makes it easier for those who succeed him. What are the main differences between previous management’s activities and what is being done now in the entity? I’ve always worked in management. I trained as a manager, worked in all areas of business, and this is my luggage. I worked at Vale, for almost ten years, on projects that went from mining to agribusiness. So, I’ve always been a little bit of a wild card. In 2015, I had the opportunity to work on the other side of the table, going to the Public Sector. I was Secretary of State, and, in 2018, I was invited to participate on the first board of the National Mining Agency (ANM). What I bring is excellence in management, integrity, and creating operating procedures. Today, AIMEX does not have a strategic plan for the future, which is already on my to-do list. A plan to outline where we want to be in five or ten years, increase membership, and create an AIMEX quality seal: the differentials offered to membership are things that I will structure. Like every executive, I don’t know how long I will be here, but I’d like to leave it all structured. How did the invitation to take over AIMEX happen? I drew AIMEX’s attention while still working as State of Pará’s Deputy Secretary of Development. AIMEX, as an entity representing exporters, was suffering greatly from the low credibility of the State and Brazilian Government abroad. There is a significant trade fair there in Nantes, promoted by Le Commerce Extérieur, a fair for French timber buyers. They wanted to know what procedures of legal origin of timber, if it is traceable, for example. They didn’t know our system. That is the case for Sisflora, which came before Sinaflora, and the IBAMA management system. So, I made myself available, went there, represented the State of Pará, and made a presentation in English and French, to the French exporters, where I divulged everything, all our regulations, for them to understand that when a state license is issued, there is the possibility of traceability, with data and transparency. All this has existed since 2016 here in the State of Pará. So, I guess I won over little confidence from them. When I asked for my resignation from the position in Brasilia with the ANM, I returned to Belém. I was looking for other areas of activity, and at that time, AIMEX knew that I was looking. And unfortunately, it was 20 days after the death of Pupo. A meeting of the executive body was held, and I was made an offer. 30 www.referenciaflorestal.com.br
