The actions of NGOs seek to protect the Amazon Forest, and give little or almost no consideration to the people living in the Forest. What is AIMEX’s position on this? I would say that a lot of this is a lack of communication. I imagine that many of these NGOs, mostly international, have no knowledge about the population, who live in the middle of the forest and who also need another source of income. Today, unfortunately, payments for environmental services are not popularized. There are payments for initiatives for ecological services, but do a colony, an Indian tribe, or a riverside dweller know that? We have AIMEX members who undertake Forest Management using workers from colony communities. They provide invoices, work legally, and this should be taken into account. That is why we have to show to society, national and international, that, at the continental level, 25 million people live in the Amazon Forest. So, if these people have no income, no way to be paid for conservation, no doubt, they will go back to depend on illegal forest operations. So, we’ll have new types of deforestation. By selectively cutting, we’re helping that forest sequester carbon, playing the role of the forest, playing the role of oxygenation. For the most part, NGOs are not fully aware of this and believe that only an intact forest has value. One of the tasks that we have ahead of us is to take on the role of awareness and get these entities to understand the products of Sustainable Management. What are your plans for a better appreciation of tropical wood? Strategic planning, by showing what is the differential of AIMEX with other associations, what are the benefits of working with us. Unfortunately, our politicians, not necessarily of this Government, pass on a perception that the associations are susceptible to corruption. And it’s not like that. We have good management programs within the Government, Sinaflor itself, and Sisflora, intelligent systems that cross-reference information. Still, unfortunately, the low credibility of our governments in the face of international frameworks weakens us. So, when French importers arrive, for example, they are full of doubts about the work involved in the timber extraction or even the legality of it. Therefore, we have to focus on creating the AIMEX seal to give more credibility to the harvested timber, aiming at international agreements through an FSC or ITTO and show what this seal means when attributed to our members - separating the wheat from the chaff.
