fifteen, then twenty. As the
author writes, sometimes it’s
not even a problem of a lack
of time; it’s our lack of joyful,
enthusiastic delight in God.
God also taught me that I
had a condescending view of
Him. I thought God depended
on me to get things done. I
thought I had to do it, or it
wouldn’t get done. I thought I
needed to help out God. But in
reality, can I really help God?
What does that say about my
view of Him? Do I really think
that God isn’t capable enough
that He needs my help? The
thinking that God could only
do His work through me
limits His power. He has an
all consuming great power. I
need God’s help! God helps
me! I can take the pressure
off myself. God is the only
one who can change people,
I cannot. I just need to love
people. God was telling me,
Vineta, this is not your ministry,
this is not your youth, this is
not your team, it is all mine.
How relieving. God is going to
carry out His mission without
you or with you. It is up to us
to decide if we want to be a
part of it.
Last lesson God had to teach
me for the second time is that
our lifestyles can burn us out.
I believe one of the devil’s
greatest tricks is to trick us
into living busy lives. Why do
we glorify being busy? If love
is patient, then why are we in a
hurry? Thinking back into the
gospels, Jesus never seemed
to live a busy life. Yes, he had
many people calling for his
attention but he never hurried
and he knew how to say no.
The devil loves to make us
believe that we are too busy
for family, too busy to read
the Bible, too busy to pray,
too busy to play. We need to
learn to slow down and learn
to say yes to the best things.
God never intended for us to
live a busy life. He even gave
us one day a week to cease
our work! God also made me
realize that I may be addicted
to work. I am constantly
working throughout the day
whether it’s doing school work,
church work, or going to my
work. I feel guilty whenever
I do a hobby or something
that wouldn’t be associated
with being “productive”. This
is not how the Lord wants us
to live. At the end of our lives
we are not going to wish we
would’ve received a higher
gpa or should’ve worked
more hours. At the end of our
lives we are going to wish we
would’ve spent more time with
people, we should’ve loved
people better. I am still working
on this everyday, and I still fall
into the trap of busyness. I am
still learning how to balance
my work with play. But the
beautiful thing is, I know I
am not the only one; we can
remind and teach each other
to play and slow down.
So if you are currently
going through burnout, feel like
it may be coming, or even you
may be coming out of it; you
should definitely make time to
read Running on Empty by Fil
Anderson. Life will never be
perfect; but life is good, life is
beautiful. Let’s embrace the
sorrows and never lose the
joy.
