Sure, hardly was Таrkovsky planning his world fame
while shooting his “Mirror” or “Solaris”… But at the
same time any creative person or team inevitable
face reality when looking for a budget or trying to
solve some “mundane” problems.
Definitely, and it is what producers usually do — an
important side of film industry, I would say. But film
producers can also be very different. Someone might
actually be planning to get rich. Why not? Once you are
a film producer, it can be your priority, I think. And I totally
understand film producers who are doing their job to
make money. If we look at the other side of the ocean,
for example, — America. For them it’s the whole industry!
Really huge! And among this industry they are making
beautiful films! So, it can be combined — and in both the
sides it will be beneficial. But it is not my case. Maybe
I am just too naïve, but I’d say I’d rather do something
else than trying to make serious money in cinema.
Measuring success by financial indicators seems
to be always characteristic of the Americans as a
nation.
Maybe, but you need to keep in mind that cinema did
start for them as an industry — in the USA, initially, it was
the second important industry after car manufacturing.
So, it had totally different grounds and it still has. So,
I wouldn’t really judge saying it’s somehow “good” or
“bad” — it’s just different. Approaches differ, and I even
actually… maybe slightly admire theirs! The ability of
making everything with a very clear economic basis,
their practical side combined with reaching the goal of
entertaining people at the same time. Why not? This is
also what we are looking for.
If to get back to “Оscar” — how were you accepted
there? Did you manage to accept their “rules of
the game”?
I think the key is to understand that you can’t just
go mad about it. You need to take it rather easy. It’s
all a game. We know the rules and we are playing
according to them and actually it can be very funny.
For the first time being in this competition, seeing
all the campaigning, all this “Oscar” race, meeting
all these people is really very interesting — really
thrilling! But! It’s not everything. You can’t take it too
seriously. And we never thought that being there was
our “everything”. If you approach it like that, cool and
calm, people around you (who are probably “in this
world”) would be accepting you at the same level.
I was not begging anyone to give me “Oscar”, I wasn’t
there for this, so I always felt rather comfortable.
Because I do see it as a game.
And the ceremony itself was very flashy, very
impressive — it’s a great thing to see! Everyone was
very relaxed, eager to communicate, discussing every
aspect of the films they had seen, which was really
showing the love the Americans have for films. They
really do. And their knowledge of cinema is so high!
