Guest Designer
been working professionally in the carpet industry
since 2013. I have mastered all the techniques of
weaving and printing carpets. I know the yarn very
well and I do not limit myself to weaving programs.
I have experienced many different design programs
in carpet design. In short, I transitioned to a period
where I produced design in every aspect. And I still
continue my design and styling works in different
areas of both carpet and textile.
What does carpet mean to you?
I grew up in a family with a high sense of aesthetics,
who wrote stories on things and lived magical
moments with those stories. I learned from them
that what matters is not the object itself, but the
trace it leaves. That’s what made the moments
unforgettable. We used to line up on the carpets
and listen to the stories of the elders of the family.
Washing the carpets together and writing stories on
the motifs on the carpets was the best fun as a child.
Today, I experience the same feelings mostly while
designing carpets. For me, a carpet is what makes a
household livable even without any other object.
What is your favorite thing to design?
Beyond creating comfort or visual appeal, carpets
have the power to initiate an emotional journey that
users experience. For this reason, I love designing
carpets. I am fascinated by the fact that people
have been using carpets as a means of expression
with various motifs for about 2500 years. Mies van
der Rohe’s “Less is more” is a quote that I remind
myself at the beginning of every design. The fact
that a design is free from ornaments, simple,
function-oriented and can adapt to any environment
by combining with the designer’s aesthetic impulse
means that the design breathes and comes to life.
By experiencing this, I adopted a minimalist design
approach over time. Nowadays, I continue to share
my designs on the website www.esraaktuccar.com.
Who are the designers or people who have
influenced you from past to present?
Claude Monet, the pioneer of the Impressionism
movement, and design theorist and architect
Christopher Alexander have always inspired me.
I also follow contemporary art exhibitions for
inspiration.
What do you think both designers and brand
owners should do to make carpets more prominent
and part of the decoration?
Gaziantep is the heart of machine made carpet
production and a city full of inspiration. I have
worked with many brands and successful designers
until today. I have learned a lot by producing
joint projects with them. I have established good
friendships. What I have observed is the lack of
design and R&D. The workload limits both brand
owners and designers. However, original designs
do not emerge without nurturing. That’s why I think
designers should get out of the fixed working system
frequently and see different art activities around
the world. I have no doubt that Gaziantep would be
not only a city of production but also a city of art if
designers, who are already successful in this lack of
time, had more space.
