Migraines are just as much a nightmare for
kids as they are for adults!
Neurology Specialist Dr. Gamze Eroğlu Arığ from the Central Hospital drew attention to
migraine pain in children and explained the unknowns about diagnosis and treatment:
Migraines, which are known
to be a condition of adults,
can have a negative impact
on anyone regardless of age. The
frequency of this condition, which
is among headache disorders that
deteriorate quality of life, can be
reduced. Families with children
who suffer from migraines have to
be familiar with the condition and
be good observers. When the child
first starts complaining about head
pain they need to take note of the
necessary information, observe the
pain process and stay with the child
throughout the treatment process.
Light and sound sensitivity
increases during the illness
Migraines are a condition that
occur in episodes with nausea,
vomiting, headache, dizziness,
vision impairment and increased
sensitivity to light and sound.
The pain, for which the reason is
unknown, emerges with chemical
changes in the brain veins and nerve
transmission system.
Migraines are genetic
Migraines are a condition that can be
passed on from parents to children.
Stress and anxiety disorders in
children can also trigger migraines
directly. Headache, the biggest
indicator of a migraine, can affect
the school performance, homework
and activities of young children and
deteriorate their quality of life.
The frequency in which it is seen
varies from 3 to 10 percent
It is a fact that migraines impact 3 to
10 percent of children. The migraine
disorder seen in boys and girls up to
school age is about equal but as they
reach adolescence it occurs twice as
much in girls.
The possible causes of migraines
have to be studied
Since it is generally difficult
for children under 7 to express
themselves it can be concerning for
parents to discover the condition.
When a child does not feel good,
does not eat things they like and say
their head hurts the family should
see a doctor. The characteristics
of the pain needs to be studied,
a physical and neurological
examination and imaging techniques
like MRI and BBT need to be done
when necessary to find the possible
cause of the pain.
Food can trigger a migraine attack
Eating habits and other factors can
trigger a migraine episode. The
foods and beverages consumed by
migraine patients can cause them to
have sudden episodes of migraines.
It is important in terms of migraines
to keep children away from foods
like chocolate and cola.
Migraines can disappear at later
ages
People with migraines as children
can have this condition disappear
at an older age. Following the
treatment and medication
recommended by the doctor can
reduce the effects of the disease.
Staying away from the things that
cause migraines is extremely
important. Listening to loud music
and spending a lot of time in front
of the computer are among factors
that increase pain. Making sure your
child avoids stress and gets regular
exercise can also help prevent
migraine episodes.
