It is predicted that deaths related to heart and vascular diseases will increase to<br />

reach 22.2 million in 2030. The main risk factors in heart and vascular diseases are<br />

hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking!<br />

“While obesity and diabetes is<br />

becoming widely common due<br />

to unhealthy nutrition and a<br />

sedentary lifestyle, hypertension,<br />

one of the most important risks<br />

in heart and vascular diseases,<br />

unfortunately occurs in one out<br />

of three adults in our country and<br />

this figure goes up to 2 out of 3<br />

after 65 years old”.<br />

According to World Health<br />

Organization data in 2012, 46.2 %<br />

of deaths not related to infectious<br />

diseases in the whole world, in<br />

other words about 17.5 million<br />

cases, were caused by heart and<br />

vascular diseases. Emphasizing<br />

that 7.4 million of these deaths<br />

were related to heart attacks<br />

and 6.7 million were related to<br />

strokes, Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi<br />

Cardiology Specialist Dr. Ayşegül<br />

Karahan Zor said, “According to<br />

Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜİK)<br />

statistics, 39% of the causes<br />

for death in Turkey in 2016 was<br />

heart and vascular diseases.<br />

While 162 thousand 876 of 408<br />

thousand 782 deaths were caused<br />

by such diseases, 19.7 percent<br />

was caused by cancer and 11.9<br />

percent was caused by respiratory<br />

illnesses”.<br />

Circulation disorders are an<br />

important cause of leg, brain,<br />

vascular and heart diseases<br />

40.5 percent of deaths related to<br />

circulation system disorders are<br />

caused by “ischemic heart” and<br />

23.6 are caused by stroke, added<br />

“Disorders caused by narrowing<br />

and blockage due to plaque<br />

development are called coronary<br />

heart disease when they occur in<br />

the arteries nurturing the heart,<br />

cerebrovascular disorders when<br />

they occur in the brain arteries<br />

and peripheric vascular diseases<br />

when they occur in the veins<br />

inside the legs and all of these<br />

disorders comprise heart and<br />

vascular diseases”. Dr. Ayşegül<br />

Karahan Zor shared 5 suggestions<br />

for heart and vascular health.<br />

5 suggestions for heart and<br />

vascular health<br />

1- Healthy nutrition: You should<br />

consume a lot of vegetables and<br />

fruit and less meat. Low fat milk<br />

and dairy products should be<br />

consumed. 2 portions a week of<br />

omega 3 rich fish like salmon,<br />

sardines and mackerel should be<br />

consumed.<br />

2- Cigarettes: The earlier you quit<br />

smoking the better quality of life<br />

you will have.<br />

3- Activity: At least 2.5 hours of<br />

medium tempo walking or 1.5<br />

hours of fast walking or running<br />

per week should be practiced.<br />

4- Blood sugar levels being kept<br />

under control at suitable levels is<br />

critical for people with Diabetes.<br />

High blood sugar is the worst<br />

enemy for the system. Therefore<br />

patients with this disease should<br />

be monitored by a doctor, use<br />

their medicine regularly and pay<br />

special attention nutrition.<br />

5- People with hypertension<br />

need to keep their blood<br />

pressure under control. Regular<br />

exercise, limited salt, increased<br />

consumption of vegetables and<br />

fruit for a healthy lifestyle in<br />

addition to medication are all<br />

factors that help reduce blood<br />

pressure.<br />
