is beginning to prevent air entering
the narrowest point in the respiratory
system, which is between
the vocal cords, and needs to be
attended to urgently at a health
institution.
Coffee and tea dry out vocal cords
Cigarettes are your voice’s worst
enemy and the most important
cause of throat and lung cancer.
It is important to quit smoking
and not expose yourself to smoke
around you. Caffeine and (coffee,
tea, chocolate) and alcohol dry
out the vocal cords and increase
damage to vocal cords. Caffeine
and alcohol should be consumed
in moderation. Increased fluid consumption
is a good idea to balance
the effects of these.
At least 8 glasses of water should
be consumed
The layer covering the vocal cord
must be kept moist. At least 6-8
glasses of water per day are necessary
to do this. The moisture in
the environment is important as
well.
changes the structure of vocal
cords but also affects vocal cords
with the constant full and irritated
feeling it causes. To prevent Laryngopharyngeal
reflux:
-Avoid acidic and spicy food. Stay
away from carbonated, acidic and
colored beverages in particular.
-Chocolate, full fat milk and dairy
products increase stomach acid
and thicken mucous which decreases
the moisture of vocal
cords.
-Make sure your stomach is empty
2-3 hours before you go to sleep
because it is easier for stomach
acid to come back up in a lying position
plus it delays gastric emptying
during sleep.
-Sleep on a pillow or make sure to
raise your mattress so your head is
at a 30 degree angle.
-Some medications cause stomach
acid to increase, eliminate
the protective barrier between the
stomach and esophagus or delay
gastric emptying. Do not use any
kind of medication, even natural
remedies, without consulting your
doctor.
Since stress causes tense muscles
it can strain your voice and cause
damage to your vocal cords. Avoid
using your voice professionally in
stressful settings.”
Do not speak loudly
1- Avoid raising your voice, yelling
or screaming.
2- Avoid frequent throat clearing
and coughing. These actions are
generally signs of bad vocal habits
and/or vocal cord dryness and can
damage your throat tissue. If you
feel the need to clear your throat,
try to swallow or drink some water.
3- Try not to talk without breathing
in sufficient air. Try not to speak
too fast and breathe more frequently
to achieve this. Breathe
deeply through your nose and
breathe from your diaphragm.
4- When your voice is distorted or
tired try not to talk too much and
sing. Cutting back on talking or not
talking for awhile will usually help
rest your voice.
Do not use medication without
consulting a physician
Medications should be used under
doctor’s advice. For example the
antihistamines that are randomly
used for colds decrease mucous
excretion and dry out the layer
covering the interior of respiratory
passages. If you need to use medications
that dry out the body you
should increase your fluid intake to
balance out the effects while you
take the medication. Also make
sure the environment in your home
and work are sufficiently humidified.
Reflux affects your voice
Laryngopharyngeal reflux not only
