Do no compromise your
eyes with cheap glasses!
Sunglasses are a wonderful
accessory to
show off your style but
their most important
function is to protect the
eyes from harmful ultraviolet
rays (UV). Conditions
like cataracts,
macula degeneration
and pterygium that sunrays
contribute greatly
to can cause serious
damage to vision.
While UV rays begin to fall
more perpendicularly with
the approaching summer
months they can cause serious
problems in the eyes. Op. Dr. Haluk
Talu from Dünyagöz Ataköy shared
information about the conditions that
can occur in these months. “Everyone
has to be more careful in the
summer months when the effects of
UV rays are intensified because you
cannot see or feel UV rays. Especially
children, the elderly and people with
lighter colored eyes may need to take
extra precautions in this period. Sunglasses
are among the most practical
precautions that can be taken.
By using sunglasses you can prevent
negative effects that can be caused
by UV rays like cataracts, macula
degeneration, pterygium and retina
damage. In addition to all these sunglasses
make you squint less, which
helps to prevent the wrinkles that
can occur around the eyes”.
100% protection is the most
important factor in selecting
glasses
Op. Dr. Talu, who pointed out
that 100% UV protection in the
lenses that are used is the most
important factor in sunglasses,
said “Although UV rays provide
vitamin D in small doses, during the
summer months that the sunrays
fall more perpendicularly they can
cause the skin to burn as well as
damage to the eyes which must be
taken seriously. Sunglass selection
plays a definitive role in protecting
the eyes in this situation. The most
important feature that sunglasses
should have is 100% UVA and UVB
protection. Cheap sunglasses
should be avoided in making this
selection because glasses that
are made using bad quality, dark
colored lenses can cause the iris
to open wider in order to detect
light and if the lens does not have
UV protection the UV rays have a
more intense effect on the irises
and increase risk. One of the other
features that glasses must have is
being suitable to the head and eye
area. Glasses that fit the face well
will prevent UV rays and make sure
eyes are not left unprotected”.
Points of caution in sunglass
selection:
• Prevents UV rays at least 99%
• Resilient to impacts
• Use of polarized and
photochromic lenses
•Well-fitting
• Wide lens area
