Traditional wallpaper from the Loire River
Atelier d’Offard
François-Xavier Richard
Wallpaper appeared in the 17th century in Great
Britain. By mid 18th century it spread over Europe,
particularly in France.
Woodblock printing consists of printing a pattern by
layering the colour. Between each layer of colour, the paper
roll is laid out to dry. Currently in the world only three
wallpaper manufacturing workshops still use this process.
Near the French Loire Valley in the city of Tours, L'atelier
d'Offard is one of them.
When François-Xavier Richard was studying sceneries and
theatre at the Academy of Fine Arts, because he personally
could not bear the loss of the traditional woodblock
printing techniques, he decided to learn it from scratch, and
became the founder of his own workshop in 1999.
The first thing he did in collaboration with his father was to
build an eighteenth century woodblock printing machine.
When you watch him using the traditional method of
woodblock printing to create wallpaper, you understand
what “handmade” means. In Chinese it is best described by
the expression "the hands of Kung Fu”.
Atelier d’Offard
Wallpapers are painted by hand with the tone pigments and paint,
it is a bit like cooking in the kitchen. Since the pigments are natural,
such as glue made with rabbit skin, craftsmen can work with naked
hands without harm.
The first step is called "coucher le fond", meaning "paper down, lying
down". More precisely ten meters long of paper are rolled out, for the
colour of the background to be painted. The colour is first sprinkled
on the paper, then the colour is brushed by hand smoothly and
evenly. Thereafter a woodblock is used to print the wallpaper. Once
the woodblock is removed, the wallpaper is suspended to the ceiling
with a special long wooden handle.
Here you can also see techniques such as the embossing, the patina,
the polishing, the varnishing, the stripes decorating, the gilding, the
mineral powder printing and other traditional printing techniques.
There is a printing process called the “tontisse” which enables the
creation of a velvet fabric from woollen powder. First a little cradle
is made to place the wallpaper, glue is applied on the wallpaper, and
then the coloured woollen powder is sprinkled on it. With the help of
two wooden batons François-Xavier very rhythmically hits upwards
from underneath the paper. The coloured woollen powder jumps
above the paper, the coloured powder is then stuck on the "mordant"
of the paper, and finally soft velvety patterns appear.
François-Xavier says that wallpapers that are made this way, from raw
material to finished paper, are alive and communicate with humans,
“it is like a skin, it breathes and is alive”.
Here the wallpapers are created for museum restoration purposes.
They are also produced for brands such as Hermes, and of course
in response to customer requirements with personalized design
wallpapers.
L'atelier d'Offard was named as a "living cultural heritage enterprise."
It is opened for visit the first Friday of each month.
