This fell through so in the summer of 1876 the couple bought the building named Flensborg in
Hafnarfjörður from the Danish wholesaler P. C. Knudtzon and his son, N. H. Knudtzon. Flensborg was to
the south of the bay and had been used as a trading post since the latter half of the 19th century.
On the 10th of August 1877 Rev. Þórarinn and Þórunn donated the Flensborg property and the homestead lot
for the foundation of Flensborg public school. They did this in order to “...honor the memory of our
unforgett-able son by giving some of our assets to some enterprise that might support education and good
conduct among the public in our country.” Pupils began attending this school as early as the autumn of
1877 and
Mr. Þorsteinn Egilsson who had been teaching classes in Hafnarfjörður in an independent capacity since
