REJUVENATING THE SOUL AND ENHANCING KNOWLEDGE | GREAT CHANGES IN 140 YEARS 53
In the 140 years that have passed since Þórarinn
Böðvarsson and Þórunn Jónsdóttir signed the pledge
that can be seen as laying the foundations for public
education in Hafnarfjörður, the town has expanded, the
number of residents has increased and matters concerning
schooling have changed a great deal. Today there are
eight elementary schools in operation in Hafnarfjörður
in addition to two private schools and the total of elementary
school pupils is around 4,200.
The Flensborg School is still going strong, having developed from its origins as an elementary school to
become a middle school and finally a comprehensive school with about 800 students. There are also 17
nursery schools in the town with about 1,800 children and we should also mention that high-profile schools
have temporarily operated here, such as the Trade School of Hafnarfjörður which was disbanded and its
operations became part of the Technical School of Iceland (later the Technical College Reykjavík) in 2015
and the School of Fish Processing, which was disbanded in 2001.
