1.2 Other Activities:
1.2.1 Integrated Projects (IP) and Networks of Excellence (NoE):
Training is organised within several in IP and NoE, for example:
- In the framework of IP ATHLET (Advanced Thin Film Technologies for Cost
Effective Photovoltaics - www.ip-athlet.eu, http://www.hmi.de/projects/athlet/) a
workshop was organised on Numerical Modelling of Thin Film Solar Cells in Gent,
Belgium, on 28-30 March 2007. The FP6 project ATHLET brings together 24 partners
from Germany (among others Research Centre Jülich (NRW); Hahn-Meitner-Institute
Berlin is the coordinator), Slovenia, Liechtenstein, Greece, UK, Switzerland, France,
Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain and Czech Republic. This 4-year project (2006-2009)
focuses on the development, assessment and consolidation of photovoltaic thin film
technology. Activities include also training measures addressing researchers from
inside and outside the project, particularly young scientists.
- The NoE DERlab (www.derlab.org) involves training activities not limited to project
partners and workshops for industry, DSOs (Distribution System Operator) and TSOs
(Transmission System Operators). More information about this NoE can be found in a
later section.
1.2.2 Summer Schools e.a.:
There are some scientific summer schools organized in France as well as in other European
countries (one week to one month). The summer schools are addressing scientific aspects
in materials and processes (fundamental to application). Photovoltaics, is usually part of
them.
Several NGO’s run training courses and distant learning activities in the field of renewables
and PV’s, e.g. INFORSE (www.inforse.org/europe/educat.htm).
1.2.3 Marie Curie Actions:
Training and exchanges of researchers are the focus of the programme that have long been
one of the most popular and appreciated features of the Community Framework
Programmes for Research and Technological Development. These actions
(http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/people/home_en.html) address researchers at all stages of their
careers, in the public and private sectors, from initial research training, specifically
intended for young people, to life long learning and career development. Fellowships are
available in any scientific discipline. Applicants to this activity are young and experienced
researchers and host organisations in academia and industry. The “Marie Curie Actions”
under the Sixth Framework Programme were part of the Specific Programme dedicated to
structuring the European Research Area. In the Seventh Framework Programme, they have
been regrouped and reinforced in the 'People' Specific Programme.
1.2.4 Erasmus:
This well-known programme includes student exchanges
(http://ec.europa.eu/education/programmes/llp/erasmus/erasmus_en.html). Since the
creation of Erasmus in 1987, 1.2 million students have benefited of an Erasmus study
