- Some relevant MSc courses
Imperial College, London (ICL) is starting a new MSc course in Sustainable Energy
Technologies that has a renewable energy module largely on PV. There are also
undergraduate courses on solar cells both in chemistry and in physics; for example, there is
an eight-hour lecture course on 'Solar Energy' to final year chemistry students. There are
also many research seminars on PV, hosted at ICL.
The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is launching a new masters in Renewable
Energy and the Built Environment (www.cat.org.uk/courses). The new programme is
taught in collaboration with the University of East London.
1.3.4 SPAIN:
In Spain, for a large number of years the Instituto de Energía Solar (IES-www.ies.upm.es)
has carried out several undergraduate and graduate courses on photovoltaics. Presently they
organize a Master course in Photovoltaic Solar Energy according to new European
standards. The course is not only restricted to the academic point of view of “solar cells and
theories”, but it is committed to the training of engineers and researchers for the
photovoltaic industry and companies. The Master course involves: electrotechnical and
material sciences, civil engineering, legal regulation, energy rating, BOS, etc.
Since 1989, CIEMAT (www.ciemat.es), a body of the Ministry of Education and Science
in Spain, as a public research agency for excellence in energy and environment promotes
yearly a course on Photovoltaics Fundamentals, Applications and Systems. The course is
open for graduate students, companies and general public interested in the technology and
applications of the PV systems.
1.3.5 SWEDEN:
At Uppsala University, there is a course in Solar Energy Technology and Systems, half of
the course is about Photovoltaics. The course has about 30 students per year, whereof
approximately 10 are foreign students. More information at
http://www.selma.uu.se/publik/main?AF=0600&funktion=kplvisn&kplanid=302&sprak=E
ngelska.
At Uppsala University, there is also a course for PhD students about Solar Cell
Technology. The course is also open for fourth year’s students.
The PV research group at Ånström Solar Center at Uppsala University manages a master’s
thesis programme that is open to foreign students. Information about this programme and
the PV research group could be found at http://www.asc.angstrom.uu.se/en/exjobb.html.
Linköping University has an International Master's Programme in Molecular Electronics
and System Design. Photovoltaic applications are studied as part of the courses in organic
electronics within the programme. More information about the master’s programme and its
courses can be found at http://www.lith.liu.se/en/master/mesd.html.
1.3.6 NETHERLANDS
The universities of TU Delft, Department of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and
Computer Science, TU Twente, department of Engineering Technology and University of
Utrecht, Faculty of Physics and Astronomy Activities in the Netherlands are offering
