period abroad. The programme is implemented by the DG Education and Culture and
additional funds are provided in each country by public authorities, by the universities
themselves and by other organisations. The scheme applies to all fields of science and
engineering incl. photovoltaics.
1.3 National Training Activities in “PV-relevant” European
Countries
1.3.1 FRANCE
In France, photovoltaics is included in renewable energy training. More and more
universities and engineering schools are active in this field such as the universities of
Bastia, Perpignan, Tarbes, Versailles, etc. A Master in Solar Energy is offered at the
University of Perpignan (http://masteres.univ-perp.fr). Moreover, several Master courses
are offered in renewable energy sources, in which photovoltaics is a part of their
curriculum, including the following:
- Master in Renewable Energy Sources at ENSAM of Corsica, Bastia
(www.bastia.ensam.fr).
- CEDER Master in Chemistry and Physics of renewable, decentralized and
transportation energies at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines
(UVSQ) and Engineering School ENSCP (www.master-ceder.ens.uvsq.frn).
The language used in these Master courses is French.
Doctorate training in photovoltaics is provided in France. ADEME offers doctorate grants
in PV. Students from any EU member state can apply but research work must be carried
out in France.
1.3.2 GERMANY:
A Master degree in Energy Systems is offered at Aachen University of Applied Science in
Germany, in which photovoltaics is included in the curriculum (http://www.fhaachen.de/scope_es.html?&L=1%252F8969.html).
Language of instruction is English. A
large number of international students take advantage of studying Energy Systems at Jülich
Campus. There are currently 90 students enrolled in the programme, only 12 of them are
from Germany.
1.3.3 UNITED KINGDOM:
Newcastle University in the UK offers the REFLEX course, which is a flexible, partially
distance learning Master course in renewable energy that can be studied either full or part
time. University of Northumbria is a partner in the course and delivers the photovoltaics
topic within it.
A teaching programme on "Photovoltaic Technology" is offered at Sheffield University
that compliments the research programme. This is taught in the following courses at
Sheffield Hallam University to prepare students for future businesses:
- BEng (Honours) in Energy Engineering for Sustainability
- BSc (Honours) in Sustainable Energy Management
