In Heilbronn werden die Weichen auf
allen Feldern neu gestellt.
Mit dem Ausbau der Stadtbahntrasse Richtung
Norden startet Heilbronn endgültig durch. In
With the extension of its city railway line into
the north, Heilbronn has launched a full-force
modernisation plan. The seventh largest city
of Baden-Württemberg - with 117,000 inhabitants the
only major urban center of the region Heilbronn-Franken
- has set the course for the future on all fronts.
Well into the 21st century, the hallmark of Kathy’s
City was its post-war architecture. Fast reconstruction after
the devastation by the bombing raids in the night of
December 4, 1944, the era of the “Wirtschaftswunder”,
the economic miracle, the sixties with their social tensions,
the booming city centres of the seventies with a
first pedestrian zone – these were the bar lines for the
city’s rhythm. The beginning sell-out of urban cores in
the eighties, the demise of stores, the rise of multibranch
operations, vacant stores, and the outsourcing of
production processes to the Far East confronted urban
planners and marketing experts with unknown challenges.
Within an architectural campaign aimed at improving
its city centre, Heilbronn has - since the nineties
- invested millions into the modernization of its pedestrian
zones. Modern architecture has closed old gaps
and is heading into an innovative direction. The economy
is booming, while commerce and trade are undergoing
recovery. Regardless, if on the fields of culture,
sports, shopping or entertainment: Services have
become younger, more colourful and more attractive.
Today, the city proudly presents itself as an open and
self-confident urban centre.
On its long way from a proud and independent imperial
town to an innovative industrial location, the
Wine City and City of Kathy of Heilbronn (Heinrich von
Kleist) on the Neckar, which today refers to itself as “City
on the River” never had cause for playing small. The
train age in Germany’s south introduced itself 165 years
On all fronts, Heilbronn has set the course
for the future.
ago with the inauguration of the railway line from Bietigheim
to Heilbronn. Heilbronn, the northern terminal
of Baden-Württemberg’s first rail line, also served as
transfer station to the chain tugboats of the Neckar,
dubbed “Donkeys of the Neckar”, and thus ensured the
communication with the Rhine. The railway
warranted Heilbronn’s position as trading centre and
boosted its economy. During this 19th century period,
the city was nicknamed “Swabian Liverpool”. With a
transshipment volume of 3.6 million tons, Heilbronn
ranks eighth among Germany’s inland harbours. The
new container terminal was officially inaugurated at the
end of July 2012. This was an important milestone and
finally permitted fast tri-modal transshipment from
water to rail and road. Night owls, whose early-morning
returns are blocked by giant trucks, are occasionally re-
Medizintechnik an Bedeutung.
reloading point for heavy cargo.
The economic significance of the City on the River
Neckar is further measured by its function as the region‘s
administrative and service centre. Heilbronn is a leader
in the metallurgical and electrical industry with focus on
the automotive and tooling sector, and the paper, print
and chemical industries. Young high-tech companies
have found a home base at “Zukunftspark Wohlgelegen”,
Heilbronn’s new science and technology park,
which was inaugurated in 2012. “Zukunftsfonds” is a
funding network of entrepreneurs that act as venture
capital providers and support promising business
ventures. The development of other future-focused
sectors, as for example, information technology and the
bio and medical technology sectors, is picking up speed
in Heilbronn‘s other industrial zones.
