on art paper printed autotyps (each of Arp, Augusto Giacometti, Kandinsky, A[dja] van
Rees and Hans Richter). - The articles are written by Tzara, Picabia, Cocteau, Reverdy,
Breton, Aragon, Radiguet. - Print on blue, red and white paper. - Saddle stitching
repaired, otherwise very well-preserved copy.
27. 14 leaves. 8to, original wrappers. - (= Die Silbergäule, 52/53). - First edition. - With
a personal dedication by Hans Arp to George[s Hugnet], without date and place. -
of 350 copies. - First book publication in Paris with illustrations by Max Ernst and also
one of the first publications using the art form of the "synthetic" collage. The common
March of the following year, marks the end of his creative period in the Dada
community of Cologne and a shift to the group gathered by André Breton. - Wrappers
and single pages slightly stained, inner hinge torned out in parts.
29. Vol. 3, No 3. 1 leaf, pp. 163-237, 1 leaf. With numerous illus. 4to, orig. wrappers
designed by Enrico Prampolini. - Original edition. - This magazine was published
between November 1921 and November 1923 in various places: Rome (until
September 1922), Berlin (October to March 1923) and New York (August 1923-1924). -
"Broom" is rooted in the New York movement of Dada, without beeing representative
for it. Harald Loeb can best described as a marginal figure of the contemporary Dadaist
activities. Instead of focusing on Dada, the magazine introduced different currents of
the European avant-garde to the U.S. audience. To promote this purpose, the wrappers
have been often designed by key individuals of those relevant movements; amongst
others by Fernand Léger, El Lissitzky, and Man Ray, and, in this case, by Enrico
Prampolini. - The issue offered includes, among others, "Epitaph" by Philippe Soupault,
which was written for Aragon, Eluard, Fraenkel, Picabia and Tzara as well as the quite
interesting article "Tatlin's Monument to the Third International" by the American artist
Louis Lozowick and Prampolinis essay "The aesthetic of the machine and mechanical
introspection in art". - The magazine is illustrated with various works of Matisse, Tatlin
and Prampolini. - Uncut specimen. - Wrappers at the corners expertly patched,
otherwise very well-preserved copy of this rare issue.
30. Vol. I., 9 numbers in 7 issues (instead of 10 in 8), Vol. II, numbers 1/2-5, 7-12 in 8
Halle (Vol. I, number 7 and 8 van den Broecke, Leipzig and sice Vol. I, No 8/9 Malik,
Berlin). April 1919 - 1922 (September). With numerous illus. inter alia by George Grosz
besides Rudolf Schlichter and Georg Scholz. 8to, original wrappers, Vol. II, issue No 3
with banderole illus. by Raoul Hausmann. - Original editions. - Almost complete
sequence of booklets listed at Gittig and Hermann. - One of the leading leftist
intellectual journals in the period of the Weimar Republic. - Only three issues missing,
namely Vol. I, No 10/12, Vol. II, No 6, Vol. III, No 3 - Apart from slight signs of usage
perfectly preserved issues of this extremely rare series.
