It was in the very final phase of my research for this issue’s
guiding topic – subversion – that I travelled to Basel Art Week
this year. At the centre of this event there is Art Basel, one of
the world’s most important fairs for showing and, above all,
for selling contemporary art. Against this background, I wasn’t
expecting to encounter much
that would have proved to
be fruitful from the perspective
of subversive practices.
At the same time, however,
I wasn’t disposed to join in
the sense of resignation that
art has lost all its subversive
potential in favour of becoming
a commodity like any
