Doubling of product offerings planned
Die Verdoppelung des Produktangebots: Epson hat viel vor
Minoru Usui, president of
Seiko Epson Corporation.
By Jo Francis
It’s fair to say that Epson has big
ambitions for print. The Japanese
manufacturer, part of the Seiko
Epson corporation which has
sales of ¥974 billion and employs
78,000 worldwide, is planning to
more than double its product
range and aims to quadruple its
revenues in industrial printing.
To put these ambitions into
context we need to travel back in
time by some 30 years. Epson’s
current president, Minoru Usui,
was an Epson engineer and he
predicted the potential for the
micro piezo inkjet technology
being developed in Epson’s research
labs. Subsequently he led
the team that successfully commercialised
the technology.
Ambitious plans
Today, micro piezo is at the heart
of Epson’s systems, and the company
hails the “speed, accuracy
and rapidity” of the imaging
method, which it believes can be a
dominant technology in a variety
of end-user markets – one of
Epson’s other goals is to replace
office laser printers with its inkjet
printers.
“There are no restrictions in the
applications for it,” Usui says.
“Micro piezo has the potential to
change all sorts of printing. It can
print extremely large media, and
extremely fast – there are almost
no restrictions; it just needs different
types of ink.”
Wide range of applications
Epson believes that one of the key
advantages it can leverage is its
ownership of the printhead and
ink technology. “We developed
the printhead ourselves so we
don’t have to share the profits
with other factories. We are fully
capable of being the price and
quality leader,” Usui states.
There is evidence of this in
wide-format printing, where
Epson is already well-established
with products such as the GS600.
It aims to set a new price/performance
benchmark with the new
SureColor SC-S30600 – at
€13,995 Epson believes it has the
lowest price of any printer in its
class.
The 162.6cm wide, roll-fed machine
prints up to 29m 2 an hour
and incorporates a new jack that
allows heavy media rolls to be
handled by a single operator.
New label printing system
Epson is also providing a glimpse
of what it believes will be a step
change in the emerging area of
digital label printing, where it will
show a technology demonstration
of its SurePress X inkjet label
Epson has the potential to become dominant in different enduser markets, says Usui
„Wir haben das technische Potenzial – und eine Menge Selbstvertrauen“, sagt Minoru Usui von Epson.
press. This single-pass device is
Epson’s first product to use UV
ink, and is also the first Epson
press to use its latest thin film
piezo technology.
The SurePress X has a small
footprint that is almost half the
size of the existing SurePress label
printer, it can print on to a variety
of substrates without the need for
special coating, and can also print
white ink.
A new digital drylab
A new digital drylab for highquality
photo applications marks
Epson’s first full-blown product
for this market, too.
Epson also recently expanded
its operations in the fast-growing
digital textile printing arena by
taking a 50% stake in Italian company
ForTex which specialises in
textile printing inks and associated
treatment agents.
Usui concludes: “The market is
definitely there for us, the question
is how we establish our presence
in it. We certainly have the
technical potential and we have a
lot of confidence.”
Man kann mit Fug und Recht
behaupten, dass sich Epson viel
vorgenommen hat. Der japanische
Hersteller – Teil der Seiko
Epson Corporation mit einem
Jahresumsatz von 974 Mrd. Yen
(rund 9,2 Mrd. Euro) und etwa
78.000 Mitarbeitern weltweit –
plant eine Verdoppelung seines
Produktangebots und sogar eine
Vervierfachung der Einnahmen
im Industriedruck.
Um diese Ambitionen zu verstehen,
muss man mehr als 30 Jahre
zurückblicken. Damals hatte Minoru
Usui, der heutige Präsident
der Seiko Epson Corporation, als
Ingenieur bei Epson das Potenzial
der Micro-Piezo-Tintenstrahl -
tech nik erkannt,
die in den For -
schungs labors von
Epson entwickelt
wurde. Später leitete
er das Team, das
diese Technologie
erfolgreich am
Markt einführte.
Heute bildet die
Micro-Piezo-Technologie
das Herzstück
der Epson-
Systeme, und das Unternehmen
feiert die „Geschwindigkeit, Präzision
und Schnelligkeit“ dieser
Methode, die nach Ansicht von
Epson das Potenzial hat, in unterschiedlichsten
Endnutzermärkten
vorherrschend zu werden – eines
der Ziele des Unternehmens ist es,
Bürolaserdrucker durch seine
Tintenstrahldrucker zu ersetzen.
“The market is definitely
there for us, the
question is how we
establish our presence.
We certainly
have the technical
potential and we have
a lot of confidence”
Minoru Usui, president of
Seiko Epson Corporation
dien bei extrem kurzen Druck -
zeiten – es gibt fast keine Einschränkungen,
man braucht nur
die entsprechenden Tinten.“
Epson hofft, vor allem von einer
Tatsache profitieren zu können:
dass man sowohl die Druckkopfals
auch die Tintentechnologie besitzt.
„Wir entwickeln die Druckköpfe
selbst, also müssen wir den
Profit nicht mit anderen
Herstellern
teilen. Und in Preis
und Qualität können
wir ohne Weiteres
die Nummer
eins werden“, stellt
Usui fest.
Der Breitformatdruck,
wo Epson
mit Produkten
wie dem GS600 gut
aufgestellt ist, lässt
das bereits erahnen. Der neue Sure
Color SC-S30600 soll in Sachen
Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis neue
Maßstäbe setzen: Mit einem Preis
von 13.995 Euro ist er laut Epson
der preiswerteste Drucker seiner
Klasse. Er verarbeitet Rollen -
medien mit einer Breite bis
162,6 Zentimetern und ermöglicht
das Bedrucken von bis zu 29 Quadratmetern
pro Stunde. Dank des
neuartigen Rollenhebers lassen
sich selbst schwere Rollen von nur
einer Person wechseln.
Neues Etikettendrucksystem
Epson präsentiert auch das Tintenstrahl-Etikettendrucksystem
Sure Press X und gewährt damit
einen Blick auf das, was nach Ansicht
des Unternehmens den sich
entwickelnden Bereich des digitalen
Etikettendrucks revolutionieren
wird. Die Single-Pass-Druckmaschine
verarbeitet als erstes
Produkt von Epson UV-Tinte, und
zum ersten Mal kommt hier die
neu entwickelte Dünnschicht-Piezo-Technologie
zum Einsatz.
Neues digitales Drylab
Die Sure Press X punktet vor allem
mit einem geringen Platzbedarf:
nur etwa die Hälfte dessen,
was der bisherige Sure Press Etikettendrucker
benötigt. Zudem
können eine Vielzahl von Bedruckstoffen
ohne Spezialbeschichtung
verarbeitet werden.
Auch das Drucken mit weißer Tinte
ist möglich. Ein neues digitales
Drylab für anspruchsvolle Fotoanwendungen
ist ebenfalls die
erste Komplettlösung von Epson
für diesen Markt.
Auch im schnell wachsenden
digitalen Textildruckbereich hat
Epson kürzlich sein Engagement
mit einer 50-prozentigen Beteiligung
am italienischen Hersteller
ForTex, der auf Tinten und Chemikalien
für den Bedruck von Textilien
spezialisiert ist, verstärkt.
„Ein Markt für unsere Produkte
ist definitiv vorhanden“, sagt Usui.
„Die Frage ist, wie wir uns darin
positionieren. In jedem Fall haben
wir das technische Potenzial – und
eine Menge Selbstvertrauen.“
