Xeikon: print-on-demand for books
Book printing is a traditional
industry, but was one of the
first to fully grasp the
potential of digital printing.
With digital printing as the
enabling technology, printon-demand
for books has
emerged as one of the
answers to the challenges
facing this sector
Print-on-Demand: Im Handumdrehen ein fertiges Buch
Traditionally, book printers
would print many copies to
achieve better economies of scale
and lower unit costs. As many as
30% of the printed books would
remain unsold, however, and end
up being pulped because they
were unpopular or outdated.
Moreover, with the advent of
e-books, it is even more difficult
for publishers to estimate the
quantities of the printed version
they are likely to sell.
Printing fine lines
Xeikon presses are particularly
renowned for their print quality.
Dry toner electrophotography
and true 1,200dpi, combined with
four-bit variable dot density, offer
smooth solids and blends with
rich colour depth and subtle
contrasts, ideal for the most vibrant
images and true-to-life art
reproductions. This resolution
also means crisp, sharp details, indispensable
for accurate printing
of fine lines such as serifs in certain
fonts, or in images such as
technical drawings.
Xeikon presses can handle an
impressive range of weights from
40 to 350 gms. Moreover, dry toner
can be used on virtually any type
of substrate, without any pretreatment,
and yields excellent results
even on ultrathin paper. There is
no risk of bleeding or deformation,
which makes the finishing
process much easier.
Xeikon presses are web-fed,
which means they have virtually
no restrictions on sheet or image
length. Combined with their ability
to print on scalable widths
(320–516 mm), this offers almost
unlimited imposition options, enabling
book printers to produce
more signatures and book blocks
per print run than competing
technologies. This imposition
flexibility also helps reduce waste.
On the coffee table
These features explain why Xeikon
presses are second to none
when it comes to short-run highquality
prints, such as coffee-table
art or travel books, and covers or
dust jackets in all shapes and sizes.
For the production of their highquality
book blocks, printers typically
turn to the Xeikon 8000
Rich colour depth and subtle contrasts: printing high-quality book blocks with the Xeikon 8000 Series
Hervorragende Farbtiefe und feine Kontraste: Hochwertige Buchblöcke lassen sich mit Xeikons 8000-Reihe drucken.
Series. For heavier covers and
dust jackets, which in many cases
are only printed on one side, Xeikon
also offers the Xeikon 3500
and Xeikon 3050. These presses
are typically used for label and
packaging applications, but due to
their imaging width of 508 mm,
are also a perfect fit for covers and
dust jackets.
The two-up printing format and
the capability of the Xeikon 8000
Series to print virtually unlimited
length enable it to work seamlessly
with inline finishing. As a result,
book printers can have an
end-to-end solution with the Xeikon
technology that converts a
roll of white paper into a finished
book. Xeikon has integrated production
lines like this in various
in-plant operations, such as the
printing unit of the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
in Vienna and the Ministry of the
Flemish community in Belgium.
Continuous printing and inline
finishing also dramatically increase
the integrity of the printed
work. This explains why Xeikon
has also installed similar solutions
at in-plant production houses of
banks and insurance companies
to print private banking and pension
fund booklets.
Der Buchdruck ist eine Branche
mit langer Tradition, gehört
aber dennoch zu den Ersten, die
das Potenzial des Digitaldrucks
voll erfasst haben. Print-on-Demand
für Bücher wurde erst mit
der Digitaldrucktechnologie möglich
und eröffnet der Buchdruckbranche
ganz neue Möglichkeiten.
Bislang wurde im Buchdruck
Wert auf möglichst hohe Auflagen
gelegt, um von den Größenvorteilen
und den niedrigeren Stückkosten
zu profitieren. Häufig werden
jedoch bis zu 30 Prozent gedruckter
Buchauflagen nicht verkauft
und müssen wieder eingestampft
werden, weil sie nicht nachgefragt
werden oder veraltet sind. Und mit
dem zunehmenden Aufkommen
von E-Books wird es für Verleger
immer schwieriger, zuverlässige
Prognosen über den Absatz gedruckter
Bücher zu treffen.
Feine Linien
Die Druckmaschinen von Xeikon
sind besonders für ihre hohe
Druckqualität bekannt. Trockentoner-Elektrofotografie
und echte
1.200 dpi sowie eine variable
Punktdichte von vier Bit sorgen
für eine hervorragende Farbtiefe
und feine Kontraste, mit denen
auch die farbintensivsten Bilder
realistisch und farbtreu wieder -
gegeben werden. Diese Auflösung
ermöglicht zudem eine hohe Detailgenauigkeit,
die beim Druck
feiner Linien – zum Beispiel der
Serifen in bestimmten Schriftarten
– oder technischer Zeichnungen
so wichtig ist.
Für die Druckmaschinen von
Xeikon sind auch unterschiedlichste
Papierstärken von 40 bis
hin zu 350 g/m2 kein Problem. Die
Trockentoner sind zudem für
praktisch jedes Substrat ohne Vorbehandlung
geeignet. Auch auf
hauchdünnem Papier lassen sich
ausgezeichnete Ergebnisse erzielen.
Es besteht kein Risiko eines
Verlaufens oder anderer Unebenheiten,
was die Endverarbeitung
erheblich vereinfacht.
Druckmaschinen von Xeikon
sind Rollendruckmaschinen. Daher
gibt es praktisch keine Einschränkung
bei der Bogen- oder
Bildlänge. Gemeinsam mit der flexiblen
Bogenbreite (320 bis
516 Millimeter) sorgt dies für unbegrenzte
Möglichkeiten beim
Ausschießen. So lassen sich pro
Auflage mehr Bogen und Buchblöcke
herstellen als mit anderen
Technologien. Dies sorgt auch für
deutlich weniger Abfallmaterial.
Bildbände und Reisebücher
Diese Merkmale erklären, warum
Druckmaschinen von Xeikon gerade
bei kleinen, sehr hochwertigen
Druckauflagen – zum Beispiel
für Bildbände oder Reisebücher,
aber auch bei Buchumschlägen
in allen Größen und Formen –
unerreicht sind. Zur Produktion
hochwertiger Buchblöcke werden
normalerweise Druckmaschinen
der Xeikon 8000-Reihe eingesetzt.
Für schwerere Einbände
und Umschläge, die häufig nur
auf einer Seite bedruckt werden,
bieten sich die Druckmaschinen
Xeikon 3500 und Xeikon 3050 an.
Sie kommen in der Regel beim
Druck von Etiketten und Verpackungsmaterial
zum Einsatz,
eignen sich aber aufgrund ihrer
Bildbreite von 508 Millimetern
auch besonders gut für Bucheinbände
und -umschläge.
Das 2-Seiten-Druckformat und
die fehlenden Einschränkungen
bei der Bogenlänge sorgen auch
dafür, dass die Xeikon 8000-Reihe
besonders problemlos zur Inline-
Endverarbeitung passt. Die Xeikon-Technologie
bietet Buchdruckern
also eine Komplettlösung,
die eine Rolle weißes Papier im
Handumdrehen in ein fertiges
Buch verwandelt.
Darüber hinaus sind integrierte
Fertigungsstraßen von Xeikon unter
anderem in den Druckereien der
Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde
(IAEA) in Wien und des Ministeriums
der Flämischen Gemeinschaft
in Belgien anzutreffen.
Ein unterbrechungsfreier Ablauf
von Druck und Inline-Endverarbeitung
sorgt auch für ein hochwertiges
Endergebnis. Aus diesem
Grund hat Xeikon ähnliche Lösungen
zum Beispiel auch in den
Druckereien von Banken und Versicherungsunternehmen
installiert,
die ihre Broschüren selbst drucken.
