Maßgeblicher Inspirator ist John Cage, der in diesen Jahren an der New School of Social Research, New 41 body and space. At the same time, the series shows his eagerness to perpetuate the production of art on the basis of its roots in European Classical Modernism as well as his interest in contemporary avant-garde positions. In 1957, Segal’s longstanding friend, Allan Kaprow, wrote a landmark essay in which he asked what was left to be painted after Jackson Pollock’s Drippings. Kaprow answered by pointing to the concept of a Happening as an event or a series of events in its unity and uniqueness of space and time that only takes place as a partially planned performance that includes artists and non-artists. Segal’s farm became the scene of initial Happenings. The required sets were also built there. Previously unthought-of levels of experience and sense were disclosed by means of music, gestures, language, the most diverse sensory impressions, a comprehensive re-orientation of modes of design and perception through staged as well as coincidental, depressing as well as stirring events, some of which remained impervious to the viewer, but not without humour and even with grotesque elements that bordered on the absurd. Reuben Gallery artists took part in Kaprow’s 18 Happenings in Six Parts in 1959. Robert Whitman surprised the audience with Duet for a Small Smell – and drove it off with hydrogen sulphide. With his ‘Event Cards’, chairs, and coat stands, the chemist and Fluxus artist George Brecht outlined minor everyday events as the limits of experience and provoked reflection on the intangibility and unpredictability of the present time. In addition to abstract gestural paintings and relief constructions, new sculptures made of scrap metal and industrial waste were presented to the visitors. Segal himself also took part, this time with Man on a Bicycle, the coarsely modelled figure of a man made of plaster, wooden slats, and burlap, mounting a bicycle. It was the first sculpture that dealt with the presence of everyday life. It was
